Masada
Masada is Israel's strongest heroic symbol of defense, the
name is from the hebrew word "metzoda" - meaning
fortress.
Masada was a refuge city since 150 BCE, for Jews from the
Greeks. The city was expanded by John Hyrceanus the first,
which made it in to something like a big castle.
During 70 CE the Romans took over Masada and destroyed and
the second temple inside. Inside the city was a refuge area
for the jews with lots of water and food supplies. The small
community of 967 men (including children and women), continued
and maintained their life there for several months.
The Romans slowly came closer and closer to the walls of
the refuge court, and the community decided that it would
be better to die then surrender to the enemy. It is against
the Jewish religion to commit suicide so the men of the community
organized an order of murders leaving only a mother and the
5 children. The next day the Romans did break down the walls
surrounding, only to find the evidence the community left
to show that they did not die from lack of water or food.
Although many other evidence were found at this spot the
story of Masada remains a mystery, as none of the bones were
ever found.
It is our deepest recommendation that you make the effort
and come see Masada at sunrise, it is a spectacular vision
you will never forget. |
