Tiberias
Herod Antipas, puppet king of Judea, built the city in 18
CE and named it after the Roman emperor Tiberias. The city
was built on the site of older jewish graves, therefore it
was not easy for the Romans to bring settlers to Tiberias.
only after Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai declared that the town is
pure, Tiberias has become populated with jews. Through the
years Tiberias was conquered by the persians , arabs and mamluks.
Today Tiberias is a city in which jews and arabs live together.
You will find lots of hotels, restaurants and cafes here.
Tiberias is a popular site for Israelis to take their summer
holiday. During the summer school holidays, (July- August)
the city is awakening with families and teenagers that starts
to arrive. Street fairs and parties,
Tiberias is located near the "kinneret" lake which
is a beautiful lake that also the main water source that supplies
the water to all Israel's parts. We recommend to go camping
near the "kinneret" , there are organized spots
for camping that charge reasonable fee. This big lake is great
for swimming, but not recommended in the nude as many of the
citizens of Tiberias are extremely religious (-"haredin"
in Hebrew).
We recommend that you check out one or more restaurants,
enjoy the local fish dishes or great salads.
